Just downstairs from my accommodation, a vibrant wholesale farmer’s market operates every night along the main road and adjacent side streets. Farmers arrive with their fresh produce, setting up stalls on footpaths, roadways, and any available space. Trucks of all shapes and sizes deliver goods throughout the night, creating a bustling atmosphere filled with lively haggling between vendors and restaurant owners who come to stock up for the day ahead.
The market is a fascinating scene of activity. Live chickens are processed on the spot, and fresh meat is butchered and displayed openly. While some items remain unrefrigerated for several hours in the warm night air, this is standard practice here, and I have enjoyed the local restaurant food without issue. What stands out most is the exceptional quality and variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, which are abundant, colourful, and remarkably affordable.
The market typically winds down by around 8 a.m., with everything packed away and the streets cleaned so thoroughly that you would never know the bustling scene had taken place. I have enjoyed walking through it and even captured a time-lapse from my balcony, which beautifully illustrates the rapid setup, peak activity, and efficient cleanup.
